Transformation is always taking place in the folklore of the African people. The spirit world, residing just outside of our view, exists along with our daily world to form the reality of our existence. In this piece, assembled from two different serpentines, the artist draws our attention to the possibility of things changing before our eyes. In ‘Transformation’ the bottom serpentine is a torso of one creature and the upper serpentine a torso of another. What is being transformed from what into what is up to the observer who has his or her own view of reality. The concentric circles on the front of the sculpture serve to create a hypnotic effect on the viewer, drawing them deeper into the serpentine and bringing them closer to the actual transformation that is occurring. Two individual stones have been carved and held together with a stainless steel pin. |
